CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

What—” Harbor cried, but she wasn’t sure how to finish her questions. What was that? What happened to her? What did I do? What did you do? The questions tumbled around in her head, none of them able to get out. She could only stare at the spot on the ground where the girl had once been. Now there was only grass and old, dead leaves completely frozen over.

“I’m sure this is all very confusing,” the woman said. Her cloak caught the light and shimmered. “That was one of The Frost.”

“That was a girl!” Harbor yelled. “A person. A child. Now she’s just . . . gone.”

“For a moment she was a girl again. Thanks to you.”

“I killed her! I killed a girl.” Harbor’s knees felt weak. She put her hand out and leaned against the tree.

The wolf, who had not been very interested in the occurrences of the past few minutes, whined softly.

“You killed The Frost, and The Frost took her with it,” the woman said. “It’s a subtle distinction to be sure, but I wouldn’t beat myself up too much about it if I were you. Now, lollygagging and looking at flowers while The Frost attack your seemingly safe encampment, that’s something to beat yourself up about.”

“What do you mean?” Harbor asked. She felt ill. Her vision was clouded. The words the woman spoke came into her head, but she could make no sense of them.

“The Frost,” the woman said and pointed at the ground. “This was a scout. One of many. They will surely find your encampment at any moment. Then all you love will be overcome.”

“By The Frost soldiers?” Harbor said slowly. “By the children?”

“Some of them were children once. Some grown-ups. Even a few dogs, I’m told.”

“Dogs?”

“But none of them are what they once were, and they won’t be again until you let them free.”

“I can free them?” Harbor asked. “How?”

“By killing them. Then they will be free. And then they will be dead. But The Frost will grow weaker with each death, and for that I am sure they will thank you.”

“But,” Harbor began. “But that can’t be it. That can’t be the only way.”

The woman only shrugged.

“Wait,” Harbor said. “I know you.”

“Indeed you do,” the woman said.

“You were there,” Harbor said. “The morning I was pricked. You were there. Did you put that pin there? Who are you?”

“So many questions,” the woman said.

Harbor was furious and confused and ready to scream because of all the emotions swirling around in her. But before she could scream, someone else did—far off in the woods, high and loud.

Harbor spun. Smoke rose from the forest. When she turned back to face the woman, the woman was gone.

Harbor had no choice but to run. She sprinted as fast as she could toward the scream and the smoke.
